What is not mentioned in the article and post is if this would affect people who are on SSI. It is Medicare for those who are 100% disabled, many times because of health issues. I know a lot of times people think that most on SSI are drug addicts but it can be due any medical condition that makes it impossible for a person to work. It is basically a person is able to get their Medicare benefits before age 62 because of medical conditions. Thus, by the definition of this quote, they would not be able to become productive members of society.
Emanuel, however, believes that “communitarianism” should guide decisions on who gets care. He says medical care should be reserved for the non-disabled, not given to those “who are irreversibly prevented from being or becoming participating citizens . . . An obvious example is not guaranteeing health services to patients with dementia” (Hastings Center Report, Nov.-Dec. ’96).
What about those who are getting treatment for cancer, it could be the eventually cancer will kill them does the government make the assumption that the treatment won’t work and urge them to euthanasia? They paid into the system but are deemed not worth they contributed before getting ill. Welcome to the World of Obamacare, just hand over all your money and die.
