As I read this article I wondered what planet Michelle lives on. She really has no idea what it is like to be a working woman or how corporations are run or even about child care.
From Washington Post
First lady Michelle Obama called her “current life” in the White House “a very blessed situation, because I have what most families don’t have — tons of support all around, not just my mother, but staff and administration. I have a chief of staff and a personal assistant, and everyone needs that.”
“Everyone should have a chief of staff and a set of personal assistants,” Obama said with a laugh as she spoke before a crowd of business executives meeting today during a “Corporate Voices for Working Families” conference at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington.
Along with the issues of community service and military families, Obama has said as first lady she wants to focus on the struggles of working families.
It would be nice to have all that she has, especially when they are paid on someone else’s dime. But, unfortunately most women are lucky if they have some help cleaning the house on a weekly or monthly basis.
But, this is what really got me.
During her 10-minute speech, Obama advocated for sick leave for parents, flexible work hours for employees and on-site child care, which she said “is something that keeps many of us up at night….You’re just wondering where are we going to put our children where we feel like that they’re being safe, that they’re safe and being loved. That will relieve many of the stresses that parents feel on the job throughout the day.”
Years ago I heard something about a major corporation thinking about providing on site child care for their workers. Located in a major city they were located in downtown skyscrapers. When they looked into doing it there really was no way they could provide it for their employees. It seemed like there was one little problem that they could not get around. When you have a child care center you have to provide a place outside for play. In other words, when you are in an area that is just buildings there is no place for the children to play outside. Now that I know more about child care, I don’t think companies should have to worry about something that is outside their area of expertise. If you want to see how difficult running a child care center can be, just go to your state website and look up the pages about child care centers.
On the other side of it is that does she expect every single employer to provide child care. Remember that small businesses make up the greatest portion of employers. Do you think that an employer who has 75 employees should have to set up a child care center with multiple teachers because of the differences in age of their employees children and also someone to run to the center? Now, suddenly rather than being in their business they are in the business of child care. Oh, and does she think the business will do this for free or will the employees be charged.
Like I said, it seems like she is living on another planet and is trying to find something that will look good on paper as her focus. So far she has said that community service and military families will be her focus. Now she is saying that she is going to add the troubles of working families. This from the woman who I have heard last job was to find ways to reroute families without insurance from the hospital she worked at to the city hospital. Oh, yeah, she has really supported community service and working families prior to January 20th. (There is a news story about a child who was released from her hospital and ended very sick at another hospital within a day or two.)
God Bless this country we need it.
